Ten years ago, the average person on the street wouldn’t be able to tell you what “CBD oil” was – but in 2019, we’re seeing those words everywhere.
If you haven’t heard, CBD oil is the latest health craze to sweep the globe. It’s a product derived from the cannabis plant, and it can be used to treat pain, inflammation, anxiety, depression and insomnia (amongst other things). CBD oil is completely legal in the UK, as it does not contain the psychoactive compound found in cannabis.
As of June this year, it’s estimated that 300,000 people in the UK use products containing CBD oil. Some use it to soothe mental symptoms such as anxiety and stress, while others use it to ease chronic pain. CBD oil is even utilised as a skincare product, as it’s believed to have anti-inflammatory properties, which are soothing for sensitive skin.
How to label CBD products
With CBD oil flooding the market, there’s increasing demand for packaging and labelling formats that can meet the specific requirements of CBD products. One of the main hurdles for CBD manufacturers is that the substance is an oil – and when oils come into contact with a paper or filmic labels, the results can be disastrous.
At Royston, we offer a wide range of filmic materials that utilise strong adhesives resistant to oils, as well as oil-resistant inks and varnishes. This means that no peeling or discolouration will occur should the oil come into contact with the label.
We can also offer an exciting range of printing and embellishment options that will make our clients’ labels stand out from the crowd. In an increasingly competitive sector, it’s vital to ensure that your CBD product looks the best on the shelf.
On the Royston premises we have flexographic, multiple-unit combination presses with raised screen options. We also have a digital inkjet press offering minimal origination costs and flexibility for multiple SKUs and short runs.
The inkjet print promises vivid colours and a unique, “stand out” effect somewhere between regular flexographic print and the raised effect of screen printing. Digital inkjet also allows for complex designs that will always be in perfect registration, with no “key lines” (the overlap between colours that is a feature of flexographic printing).
Our embellishment options include detailed hot and cold foiling in a variety of colours and effects. We can supply special effect foils including holographic silver and holographic translucent, which allows the print beneath to show through. We can screen print with coloured and opaque inks and use raised tactile effects to embellish text and images.
In short, whatever design you’ve dreamt up for your CBD product, Royston can easily bring it to life.
Royston & Revolution Beauty
We recently collaborated with beauty brand Revolution to produce labels for three of their skincare products containing CBD oil: Nourishing Oil, Nourishing Essence Spray, and the Always Extra Collection (which contains a miniature of the Nourishing Oil).
If you run a company that produces CBD products and you think you could benefit from Royston’s expertise, we’re only a phone call away.
